Our History
Our story begins in Oakland, California, with our founder, James Freeman. What started as a single cart selling roasted coffee beans at the Old Oakland Farmers Market has evolved into a rich, diverse community of cafes that span the globe, from New York to Shanghai.
From our earliest days, we’ve drawn inspiration from the richness of coffee cultures around the world — places where patience, precision, and hospitality can transform a simple cup into something profound.

This is the calling of our baristas around the world: to prepare and serve this ancient and deeply beloved alchemy using the most thoughtful, curious, and generous expression of omotenashi — a selfless and wholehearted approach to hospitality. The pour over is our first and most iconic drink, a hand-brewed ritual that slows time to let every nuance of the coffee shine. To bring this cafe-quality clarity into your home, we spent a year collaborating with engineers on 70 prototypes to perfect the Blue Bottle Dripper. Paired with our custom bamboo filters and elegant Kinto glass carafe, this thoughtful design invites focus, intention, and an exceptional cup every time.
