In the early 1950s, Stanford University turned sixty-two acres of its hay fields into the bustling Stanford Shopping Center, which immediately became a classic of the genre. Today it’s wonderfully defied the rise of online shopping, remaining a vital hub for students and tech workers from nearby Silicon Valley. As conceived by architects Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, our cafe there is intended as a respite, with simple and subdued materials. The inspirations are twofold: first, the crisp, geometric lines of origami, and second, the vaulted spaces of spiritual reflection. This starts with the custom facade of pleated light gray slats, known as öko skin made by Rieder, whose texture hints at the quality of the space within. Beyond the door, sculpturally folded vaults emphasize the verticality of the space. We invite daylight in with a series of skylights at the apex of each vault so you can feel close to the outdoors as you enjoy your pour over inside.
