The transition between silent films and talkies was a tumultuous one: Mary Pickford declared that, “Talking pictures are like putting lip rouge on the Venus de Milo.” Though most of us would probably agree this wasn’t her most clairvoyant moment, we think her belief—that you just don’t mess with a good thing—is as sound as ever.
Beverly Hills, once home to Pickford and her cohort of silver-screen luminaries, has become shorthand for glamour. But when we saw that our South Beverly cafe had such good bones, we knew we didn’t want to change much, not even to fit in with the luxe environs. This cafe, designed by wrk-shp and Lincoln Lighthill, strives for simplicity above all things.
Acoustically designed to absorb sound, it’s an excellent spot for a leisurely chat with friends over your favorite espresso drinks, pour over coffee, and cold brews. Relaxing in this vernal escape (perhaps with only a book and one of our pastries for company), you might even forget the neighborhood’s glittering past and glitzy present.
