When it was built in 2002, Santana Row in San Jose was considered the most ambitious mixed-use development of its kind in the United States. More than fifteen years after its creation, the village within the city remains a gathering place for locals and a destination for tourists from as far away as Europe and Asia.
Our cafe sits on Santana Row itself, in the center of the development, where there is also a farmers market every Wednesday. For our 400-square-foot kiosk, we stripped away the ornamentation on an existing building to reveal the post-and-beam structure within. We then clad the columns and soffits in fireclay tile for a simple, minimalist feel.
To take advantage of our central location, we designed the cafe to feel as open to the outside as possible, with wide doors and floor-to-ceiling windows. The cafe also has plenty of patio seating as well as an outdoor fireplace so you can linger outside over your latte no matter the season.
