We have an odd but convivial coffee kiosk in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley. We opened the kiosk in our friend Loring’s garage in January of 2005. Linden Street, at the time, was a dead-end alleyway that smelled like pee, so there was a certain amount of head-scratching that winter.
The glamorous ladies next door at the shops liked us, though, despite our spartan menu, and the free drink tickets we printed for our neighbors kept them coming back. It was a strange and wonderful time.
Now, the alleyway is one of the city’s most surprising urban pleasures. Our kiosk offers a focused menu of espresso drinks, drip coffee, New Orleans–style iced coffee, and treats from our Oakland kitchen. We serve our Hayes Valley Espresso on a three-grouphead La Marzocco Linea, and we grind and brew drip coffee individually, a la minute. We sell whole beans there, too.
