It’s rare to find a utilitarian tool turned into art so fine it holds a place in history. Created in 1941, the Chemex was chemist Dr. Peter Schlumbohm’s pursuit of perfectly brewed coffee. It’s not only a part of New York’s Corning Museum of Glass, but it also graces the Illinois Institute of Technology’s 100 Best Designed Products, thus proving its flawless blending of style and function.
The Chemex’s continuous glass curves produce an intensely fragrant, clean, and multifaceted pour over.

Design Story
Born From Science, Made For Beauty
- Inspired in a Lab
The curved hourglass shape was inspired by the scientific apparatuses in Dr. Schulmbohm’s lab. The design was inspired by the Erlenmeyer flask, known for its filtration and extraction.
- Tweaked to Perfection
He modified the laboratory funnel by adding a pouring spout and an “air channel” that allows displaced air from the brewed coffee to escape past the filter.
- Unadulterated Taste
The coffee only comes in contact with the filter (sold separately) and the non-porous borosilicate glass of the Chemex, so no intruding flavors get in the way.
