About This Coffee
San Francisco-based Mokhtar Alkhanshali founded Port of Mokha to reconnect coffee drinkers everywhere to Yemen, the very origin that began the world’s infatuation five centuries ago. Port of Mokha works with farmers in the remote Al-Jabal region to natural process heirloom cultivars, producing delicately fruited and floral coffee. The obstacles facing the farmers are many, but in the midst of war, Port of Mokha’s mission to connect farmers to the specialty supply chain offers a vital source of hope.
Lot 40 comes from the harvest of just a few farmers whose trees grow at 2,350 meters, the highest points of cultivation in Al-Jabal. This coffee consists mostly of the Udaini cultivar. Known as “ancient Typica,” the inherent stress of such a high and arid landscape compels the fruit to become more complex. Despite the Herculean effort required to transport Lot 40 from such high altitude, the finished coffee is preternaturally balanced, where citrus notes counterpoint an alluringly full and heavy body.
