Costa Rica Rivense del Chirripó La Guaca
Through the clouds of Cerro Chirripó, Costa Rica’s tallest peak, the Caribbean and Pacific are simultaneously within view. Divided by land, the cerulean waters unite in a climber’s field of vision. Two oceans, for a solitary moment, become one. Rivense de Rivas estate is situated in the mountainous Brunca region, a botanically diverse area new to specialty coffee. In the years that the Ureña family has worked this land, they’ve continuously honed production methods and refined their craft. La Guaca, or “the Gem,” comes from flourishing Catuai plants on top of a ridge above the Ureña’s home. As would be expected from Brunca’s first Cup of Excellence winner, this caramel-inflected, cherry-driven coffee is dizzyingly good.
