Located in the corner of a retrofuturistic building once called the Sumitomo Bank Building, our Uptown Oakland cafe takes a cue from the space’s high vaulted ceilings and arched windows, which from the outside, still evoke the era of when America landed a man on the moon.
Designed by architects Shigenori Iyama and Robert Tanaka, the building’s sleek modern lines create a cavernous interior befitting a financial center. Our communal standing table gives guests, who may be swooping in before catching the nearby train, a place for a quick espresso and croissant. Though lingering is welcomed, too: The cafe is wedged between Lake Merritt and the historic Paramount Theater—an ideal stop for a pour over before an evening promenade or a show.
