Our Design District cafe is inside a parking structure that may well be the most glamorous in existence. Like Miami itself, it glimmers and surprises: Tessellated metal wraps around the exterior, and two John Baldessari murals of sunbathers loom as large as billboards.
In principle, our cafes aim to reflect the uniqueness of the neighborhood. But in this case, taking this concept literally would mean creating a work of art. Within the modest perimeters of the Design District, there are countless architectural masterpieces, three versions of Buckminster Fuller’s Fly’s Eye Dome, and a larger-than-life bust of the pioneering architect Le Corbusier. And that’s just scratching the surface.
So, we decided to take a cue from Le Corbusier himself, who said that “Light creates ambience... as well as the expression of a structure.” Indeed, natural light fills the spare interior, bounding upwards twenty feet to the exposed ceilings and bouncing against painted concrete walls. This is a place for guests to catch their breath over a pour over coffee or espresso drink, to satisfy hunger with our seasonal menu, or to find sophistication equal to the neighborhood at our Cold Bar, which serves zero-proof coffee cocktails.
As for inspiration, there’s no shortage of that to be found in the place dubbed the “Magic City.” We’re just happy to be a part of it—where design and play mix with heat and late-night dancing, where Robusta espresso and sugar meet in styrofoam cups, and where high art adorns a parking garage.
